Sirajganj: In Sirajganj, farmers have turned to maize cultivation in a hurry. A record amount of land has been cultivated this time. Corn farming is increasing day by day as it is more profitable than rice. Farmers of this upazila are interested in maize cultivation due to high demand in the market along with double profit at low cost.
It is known that farmers have started sowing seeds of corn, potato, onion, garlic and other crops in different unions of Tarash upazila. Corn seedlings were seen growing somewhere. Many are spraying insecticides to save corn plants from insects.
In Dighi Saguna village of the upazila, it can be seen on the surface, only corn fields and corn fields across the horizon. Talking to the farmers, they said that we grow corn because it is relatively easy and the yield is high.
Farmers say that the cost of growing maize is lower than that of other crops, even though the cost of production increases due to the increase in the price of oil, fertilizers and pesticides. Not only that, every year the price of corn is increasing by two to four hundred rupees per maund.
According to Upazila Agriculture Office sources, this time the target of maize cultivation has been set in 1400 hectares of land. This year 84 thousand metric tons of corn will be produced. But in reality, much more land is cultivated with maize than this.
