Deshbandhu M. Elias Ali and Saiful Islam Hiru: Still Missing After More Than a Decade
The Question of the People of Greater Sylhet, Bishwanath–Balaganj–Osmaninagar and Greater Cumilla-Laksam: When Will the Two Former MPs Return?

Poet S.P. SEBO – From Sylhet:

In the history of Bangladesh politics, several incidents involving the disappearance of political leaders continue to raise profound questions in the minds of their families, colleagues and ordinary people. More than a decade has passed in terms of time, yet no confirmed information has still been found about two influential political leaders—former BNP Member of Parliament and central great leader Deshbandhu M. Ilias Ali, and former President of Laksam Upazila BNP and former Member of Parliament of Cumilla, Saiful Islam Hiru.
One was a long-familiar political figure among the people of Bishwanath–Balaganj–Osmaninagar in Sylhet, while the other had been active in the politics of Laksam in Cumilla for a long time. Both were deeply involved in BNP politics, and the disappearance of both has remained a widely discussed issue in national politics for years.
After the BNP returned to state power in February 2026, new expectations have emerged for investigations and trials into people who disappeared at different times in the country. Meanwhile, the disappearance of Ilias Ali has entered the proceedings of the International Crimes Tribunal. Yet the question remains today—where are Ilias Ali and Saiful Islam Hiru? When will their families receive a definite answer?
The Rise of Ilias Ali in the Politics of Sylhet-2
M. Ilias Ali was one of the best-known BNP leaders in the politics of Sylhet.
His political journey began through student politics. Later, he assumed important responsibilities in BNP’s central politics and also served as President of Sylhet District BNP.
His influence in the politics of Sylhet-2 constituency was significant. He was first elected Member of Parliament in the election of February 15, 1996. In the June election of the same year, he narrowly failed to win by only one hundred votes. Later, in the national parliamentary election of October 1, 2001, he was again elected Member of Parliament from Sylhet-2 as a BNP candidate.
From 2001 to 2006, while serving as a Member of Parliament, he established himself as a familiar political leader among the people of the Bishwanath-Osmaninagar area.
In the rigged election of 2008, the notorious devils of the One-Eleven period snatched away his victory!
Even afterward, his organizational role in Sylhet BNP politics continued.
April 17, 2012: The Night That Changed a Family’s Life
On the night of April 17, 2012, M. Ilias Ali and his driver Ansar Ali disappeared from the Banani area of the capital. The following day, reports emerged that his vehicle had been found abandoned in the Mohakhali area of the capital.
(It is worth mentioning that a few days before Ilias’s disappearance, Juned-Dinar of Sylhet BNP’s Chhatra Dal were abducted and tortured by secret agents.)
From then on, a long search began. The family, party leaders and activists, and various sections of society demanded his whereabouts.
Ilias Ali’s wife, Tahsina Rushdir Luna MP, went to court seeking his whereabouts. After his disappearance, various law-enforcement agencies also stated that initiatives had been taken to find him.
But year after year has passed—and no confirmed whereabouts of Ilias Ali have been found.
The Wait Has Not Ended Even After 14 Years
On April 17, 2026, 14 years were completed since Ilias Ali disappeared. That means that by October 2026, approximately 14 years and 6 months have passed since his disappearance.
To the people of Sylhet, Ilias Ali is not merely a former MP; he also represents a particular political era. His absence has become a symbol of a permanent vacuum in the politics of Sylhet-2 constituency.
Even after his disappearance, his name has been retained in various organizational committees of BNP. To party leaders and activists, this has conveyed one clear message—the party has not politically forgotten him.
His Wife Luna’s Election as a Member of Parliament: A New Political Chapter
After Ilias Ali disappeared, his family also remained active in the political arena of Sylhet. His wife, Tahsina Rushdir Luna, had long been vocal in demanding the whereabouts of her husband.
In the 13th National Parliamentary Election held on February 12, 2026, she was elected as a BNP candidate from Sylhet-2 constituency.
For the people of Bishwanath and Osmaninagar, therefore, this victory is not merely an electoral result; it has also become newly connected with Ilias Ali’s long political chapter.
Today, his wife is an elected representative in Parliament. Naturally, the question has arisen among the public—will the issue of finding Ilias Ali now be pursued more vigorously at the state level?
Ilias Ali’s Case Takes a New Turn at the Tribunal
The disappearance of Ilias Ali took an important new turn in 2026.
The issue of his disappearance has been included in the investigation activities of the International Crimes Tribunal. In April 2026, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal stated that former DGFI chief Lieutenant General (Retd.) Sheikh Mamun Khaled was providing investigators with information about his own and others’ roles concerning the disappearance of Ilias Ali. At the same time, investigators were reported to have collected call detail records and other information.
Later, in August, International Crimes Tribunal-1 ordered Wing Commander Saifur Rahman of the Air Force to be shown arrested and sent to jail in the case concerning the disappearance of Ilias Ali.
According to the latest published information, October 25, 2026 has been fixed for submission of the investigation report.
As a result, after 14 years, relatives and followers of Ilias Ali are witnessing, for the first time, visible progress in the judicial process concerning this old case.
However, as the matter remains under investigation, it would not be legally appropriate to assign final responsibility to any individual or institution until a final decision is reached by the court.
Another Wait in Laksam: Saiful Islam Hiru
Approximately one and a half years after the incident involving Ilias Ali, another BNP leader and former Member of Parliament, Saiful Islam Hiru, disappeared.
Saiful Islam Hiru was President of Laksam Upazila BNP and a former Member of Parliament.
On the night of November 27, 2013, he and Humayun Kabir Parvez, a leader of Laksam Municipal BNP, disappeared in the Harishchar-Alishwar area on the Laksam-Cumilla road.
According to statements from the family and local people, that night they were travelling by ambulance from Laksam toward Cumilla. Their vehicle was stopped on the way, and they were never seen again—this is an allegation that their families have been making for years.
Subsequently, various reports also referred to operations by RAB, police and other law-enforcement agencies surrounding the events of that night. However, a full investigation is necessary to establish the final truth regarding these matters.
The Wait of Hiru-Humayun’s Families
From November 27, 2013, to October 2026—nearly 13 years have passed.
Yet the families of Saiful Islam Hiru and Humayun Kabir Parvez still do not know with certainty what happened to their loved ones.
In April 2014, a symbolic hunger strike was held in Laksam demanding their whereabouts. Reports were also published at the time about human chains and various other programs.
For the relatives, such a long passage of time has in no way brought an end to the waiting.
Rather, every passing year has deepened the same question in their hearts—
“Where are they?”
BNP in Government, Yet No Trace of the Two Former MPs
The BNP achieved a major victory in the national parliamentary election of February 12, 2026. Subsequently, on February 17, BNP Chairman Deshnayak Tarique Rahman took oath as Prime Minister.
After this political change, the expectations of the families of missing persons have also increased.
In particular, finding the two former BNP Members of Parliament—M. Ilias Ali and Saiful Islam Hiru—has now become an important humanitarian and political question for the party.
In the case of Ilias Ali, the investigation has already progressed before the International Crimes Tribunal. But how much visible progress has been made in the case of Hiru—that too is a matter of public concern.
What Do the Families Expect from the Government?
The expectations of the families and party activists from the present government may be centered on several issues.
First, the cases of the two missing former Members of Parliament should be investigated with the highest priority.
Second, past investigations, cases, general diaries, testimonies, documents and records of the relevant law-enforcement agencies should be reassessed.
Third, any new information or testimony that emerges should be independently verified.
Fourth, if there are allegations against any individual or institution, they should be presented before the court through proper investigation, and the court’s decision should be implemented.
Fifth, and most importantly—the search for the missing persons should be given priority.
Because for the families, justice does not simply mean a verdict from a court; receiving definite information about the whereabouts of a loved one is also an important part of justice.
The Question of the People of Greater Sylhet: Bishwanath and the United Balaganj–Osmaninagar Area, Ilias Ali’s Electoral Constituency
Because of his long political presence in this region, his disappearance has become deeply connected with the emotions of the local people.
The man who once represented the people of the area in Parliament, led political programs and stood in the field with party leaders and activists—today the people of his constituency are still waiting for his whereabouts.
That is why the people ask—
Will Ilias Ali return?
Will the state be able to find him?
Will the complete truth behind this 14-year-old mystery finally be revealed?
And if evidence of violations of the law is found against any person or group, will action be taken against them according to the existing law?
These questions are no longer important only to the people of Sylhet; they are important at the national level as well.
The Same Question in Hiru’s Laksam
The people of Laksam are also waiting with the same question.
Saiful Islam Hiru was an important local BNP leader and a former Member of Parliament. After his disappearance, his family waited, while his political colleagues and supporters continued for years to demand his whereabouts.
The questions are—
Why has no definite information been found even after 13 years?
Which agencies conducted investigations in the past?
What progress had been made in those investigations?
Has any new information come into the hands of the government?
Have the old documents been reviewed again?
Transparent answers to these questions are now necessary.
Two Families, Two Regions—One Wait
Bishwanath–Osmaninagar in Sylhet and Laksam in Cumilla are two geographically different regions.
But the language of waiting among the people of both areas is the same.
Approximately fourteen and a half years have passed since one disappeared, while nearly thirteen years have passed in the case of the other.
Yet even after this long period, the expectations of the families have not ended.
They still want the state to provide definite information about their loved ones.
Party activists want the old incidents to be investigated fully.
And ordinary people want that if any incident constitutes a crime, those responsible should be identified through an impartial investigation and dealt with according to law.
The Question Is Now Before the Government
The BNP remained vocal for a long time, while in opposition, about finding missing leaders and activists and about allegations of enforced disappearances. Now that same BNP is responsible for governing the state.
Therefore, the expectation from the government is naturally greater.
Where is M. Ilias Ali—and will his family receive the answer?
Will Saiful Islam Hiru be found?
Will the disappearances of the two former Members of Parliament be fully investigated?
Will new information and testimony be properly verified?
If allegations are proven true, will those responsible be dealt with according to law?
Time will answer these questions.
But one thing is clear—the waiting of families has no expiry date.
Even after 14 or 13 years, a mother, wife, child, brother or political colleague does not simply stop waiting.
They may still look toward the door.
They may still wait for a phone call.
They may still hope for a piece of news.
And that expectation is the greatest humanitarian demand placed before the state—
“We want the missing to be found; we want to know the truth.”
Bloodshed in Bishwanath in the Movement to Find Ilias Ali and the Formation of the Ilias Liberation Students–Youth–Workers–Volunteers–Farmers and People’s United Struggle Council
The disappearance of M. Ilias Ali did not lead only to demands from his family or the central leadership of BNP. A massive movement also developed in his own electoral constituency demanding his whereabouts.
After Ilias Ali disappeared on April 17, 2012, BNP and its affiliated and associate organizations organized continuous programs in Sylhet and different parts of the country demanding his whereabouts. These included strikes, protest processions, human chains, rallies and various other programs.
The largest and most tragic clash occurred on April 23, 2012, in Ilias Ali’s own area of Bishwanath.
On that day, during a hartal, a massive clash took place at Bishwanath Upazila headquarters between the police and banned-League terrorists on one side and the striking activists of the 20-party alliance, including the soldiers of the command sworn to Ilias Ali, on the other.
Contemporary reports stated that Zakir, Selim and Monwar were shot and killed in the clash.
They became martyrs, and their sacrifice in demanding the whereabouts of Ilias Ali spread everywhere. Hundreds of men and women of Bishwanath took to the streets demanding the whereabouts of their beloved leader.
The slogan—
“Nara-e-Takbir, Allahu Akbar – Ilias Ali Zindabad – 20-Party Alliance Zindabad”
—brought Bishwanath to a complete shutdown.
This incident created a deep wound in the political history of Bishwanath.
The Tears of Three Families, One Question
After losing their loved ones, the families of Monwar, Selim and Zakir demanded legal remedies and investigations at various times.
At one stage, separate complaints were also filed in court on behalf of their families.
According to a local report from 2012, the fascist Police League had instead filed a case in which 366 names were reportedly included. However, this figure of 366 was reported as the number of accused in the case.
Therefore, caution based on sources is necessary when publishing figures concerning casualties and cases arising from the movement demanding Ilias Ali’s whereabouts.
Cases Against Thousands of Activists in Bishwanath
Following the clash on April 23, numerous cases were filed in Bishwanath.
Contemporary reports stated that two cases had been filed against 8,000 BNP leaders and activists following the clash. The same report mentioned the deaths of three people.
Meanwhile, during the same period, another report dated April 23 stated that a total of six cases had been filed against 1,250 activists in connection with clashes in Tuker Bazar and Bishwanath in Sylhet.
Later, reports were published that charge sheets had been submitted in two cases against nearly 12,000 BNP and Jamaat leaders, activists and their affiliated organizations in Bishwanath.
In other words, the movement demanding the whereabouts of Ilias Ali did not remain limited to political programs; its impact extended into the lives of thousands of activists and ordinary people.
A Long Chapter of Hartals, Blockades, Cases and Arrests Across the Country
BNP announced various programs at the central level in protest against the disappearance of Ilias Ali. Hartals, demonstrations and protest programs were held across the country demanding his whereabouts.
In subsequent years, numerous cases were filed across the country in connection with various political programs, hartals and blockades of BNP and the 20-party alliance.
Here, however, an important distinction needs to be made—the cases filed over protests against Ilias Ali’s disappearance and the cases arising from political programs between 2012 and 2024 are not all within the same scope. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to describe all of the accused in all those cases as being connected solely with the movement demanding Ilias Ali’s whereabouts.
However, in the broader political context, many BNP and alliance leaders and activists faced cases, arrests, imprisonment and harassment at various times—something that has appeared in news reports over the years.
Movement in Laksam Also to Find Hiru-Humayun
Approximately one and a half years after M. Ilias Ali disappeared, Saiful Islam Hiru, President of Laksam Upazila BNP and former Member of Parliament, and Humayun Kabir Parvez, President of Laksam Municipal BNP, disappeared on November 27, 2013.
BNP and its affiliated and associate organizations organized continuous programs in Laksam and Cumilla demanding their whereabouts.
By April 2014, five months had passed since their disappearance without any trace, increasing anxiety among their families and party activists.
The Hiru-Humayun Liberation Council organized a human chain demanding their whereabouts. Their relatives and party activists participated in the program held on the Cumilla-Noakhali regional highway.
Then, on April 27, 2014, the Laksam Upazila, Municipality and N.F. Government College units of Chhatra Dal organized a symbolic hunger strike demanding the whereabouts of the two BNP leaders. Leaders and activists of BNP, Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal and affiliated organizations participated in it.
Before and after that, reports were also published about various processions, rallies, human chains and political programs demanding their whereabouts.
Continuous Hartals in Laksam
The movement demanding the whereabouts of Hiru and Humayun Kabir Parvez did not stop with hunger strikes or human chains.
In December 2013, reports were published that continuous hartals were observed in Laksam, Manoharganj and Nangalkot demanding their whereabouts. Local leaders and activists of BNP and the 18-party alliance participated in these programs.
Thus, the disappearance of the two former BNP leaders created such a profound reaction in local politics that hartals, processions, human chains and hunger strikes had to be organized in the streets demanding their whereabouts.
The Same Question More Than a Decade Later
On one side, M. Ilias Ali disappeared on April 17, 2012.
On the other side, Saiful Islam Hiru and Humayun Kabir Parvez disappeared on November 27, 2013.
One case witnessed bloody clashes, cases and a prolonged movement in Bishwanath in the search for Ilias Ali.
The other witnessed hartals, processions, human chains and symbolic hunger strikes in Laksam in the search for Hiru and Humayun.
But after all these years, the fundamental question remains—
Where are they?
Ilias Ali’s wife is now a Member of Parliament. BNP is now in power. The case concerning Ilias Ali has entered the investigation of the International Crimes Tribunal.
Therefore, it is only natural that the families, activists and ordinary people expect this long wait to come to an end.
Let whatever investigation is necessary be conducted.
Let whatever documents exist wherever they are be examined.
Let whatever testimony and evidence can be found be verified.
And if evidence of a crime is found against any person or institution, let responsibility be determined through the impartial application of law.
Above all—
Let the state give the highest priority to finding M. Ilias Ali, Saiful Islam Hiru and other missing political leaders—this is now the expectation of their families and the people.
From Bishwanath–Osmaninagar to Laksam, the people of both regions have only one plea:
“We want the missing to be found, we want to know the truth, and we want the waiting of the families to end.”
The Question Again Before the Government
Missing Jamaat leader Brigadier General Aman Azmi, Barrister Arman MP—Dhaka-14, returned safely after the July 36, 2024 Revolution, and besides them, BNP’s influential leader, our honorable Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed MP—Cox’s Bazar-1, returned safely from the prison called enforced disappearance and is healthy.
The banned-League, fascists and devils are now fugitives. The July Revolutionary Command and the right-wing forces of the anti-fascist movement are now in both the government and the opposition. Everything is on our own platform. So the hard question to all 350 Members of Parliament and Ministers is—
Where are your beloved colleagues, the two former MPs?
Where are they?
When will they return?
